Prohibitory orders enforced in Prayagraj ahead of Mahakumbh events

Prayagraj authorities have imposed prohibitory orders across the district until February 28, to maintain law and order during the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela and other scheduled events.

The Additional Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, issued the orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023 (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023). The directive aims to prevent potential disruptions during the festival season and various competitive examinations.

The Mahakumbh Mela, which started on January 13, coincides with multiple religious, cultural, and national events, including Republic Day, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Valentine’s Day, Shab-e-Barat, and Mahashivratri. It also overlaps with several competitive exams.

Officials highlighted concerns over the district’s communal sensitivity, stating that anti-social elements could disrupt peace during the festivities. The prohibitory order prohibits several activities to safeguard public interest and ensure the smooth conduct of events.

Key measures under the prohibitory orders include:

Restrictions on Public Gatherings: Events, processions, demonstrations, and fasts are prohibited without prior permission.

Designated Protest Sites: Protests are limited to the site near Patthar Church in Civil Lines, as designated by authorities.

Drone Restrictions: Drones are banned for traditional events unless used for official purposes and approved by competent authorities.

Prohibition of Weapons: Carrying weapons, including lathis and firearms, is banned within the district limits except for authorized personnel.

Ban on Provocative Content: Provocative speeches and dissemination of materials that may incite tension or hurt sentiments are prohibited.

Social Media Regulation: The circulation of misleading or sensitive content on social media platforms is prohibited.

Restrictions on Harmful Media: Sale and distribution of audio and video content likely to create public unrest are banned.

Safeguarding Public Property: Any damage to private or government property is prohibited.

Industrial and Commercial Operations: Disruption to industrial and commercial establishments or the movement of essential goods is restricted.

Protection of Public Transport: Damage or disruption to buses and vehicles is prohibited.

Traffic Regulations: Obstruction of public roads and traffic is forbidden.

The prohibitory orders are in effect throughout the Police Commissionerate Prayagraj to ensure a peaceful environment for upcoming events. The Mahakumbh, which began on January 13, will conclude on February 26. Key bathing dates include January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), February 3 (Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivratri).
