Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha said on Tuesday that an announcement on the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is expected later this month, with a public declaration likely around November 25–26 during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.
PT Usha was present at DLF Avenue, Saket, where Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled the King’s Baton for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in New Delhi.
Speaking to reporters, Usha said: “The announcement of the 2030 Commonwealth Games will come very soon, and the public announcement will come on November 25–26. There is an AGM in Glasgow… It will be a good inspiration for all our players
Last month, the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport recommended Ahmedabad as the host city for the centenary edition of the Games, pending final approval at the Glasgow meeting.
According to the Commonwealth Sport website, the decision followed a detailed evaluation process assessing the candidate cities on technical readiness, infrastructure, athlete experience, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth values.
Both Ahmedabad (India) and Abuja (Nigeria) were part of the final shortlist under the organisation’s “Games Reset” principles, aimed at fostering innovation and long-term sustainability.
The 2030 Games will mark 100 years since the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada. The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board has also agreed to work with Nigeria to strengthen its future hosting prospects, including a potential bid for the 2034 Games.
India, which finished fourth in the medal tally at the 2022 Birmingham Games, has a longstanding sporting tradition within the Commonwealth. Ahmedabad’s bid highlights India’s capacity to host large-scale international sporting events and its commitment to the Commonwealth’s values, the organisation said.
