Pune is set to host the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group-1 tournament for the first time in Indian tennis history. The event, taking place from April 8-12 at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex, marks Maharashtra’s return to hosting an international tennis tournament after 25 years.
Six teams—India, New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Korea, and Thailand—will compete in a round-robin format, with each tie consisting of two singles and one doubles match.
MSLTA secretary Sunder Iyer expressed excitement, stating, “MSLTA is thrilled to host another high-level event after the success of the Mumbai Open WTA and Maha Open ATP Challenger.”
India, led by Ankita Raina, will aim for one of two qualification spots available, bolstered by doubles specialist Prarthana Thombare. The competition will see strong contenders, including New Zealand’s Lulu Sun and Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
