Quad is here to stay, partner and complement: PM Modi at Leaders’ Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to the United States, where he attended the QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) summit on Saturday. During the summit, he referred to the grouping as a “force for global good,” emphasizing that “it is here to stay, partner, and contribute,” according to sources.

“The Prime Minister further referred to the Quad as ‘Quick Unified Assistance Delivery,'” the sources said.

The Quad leaders expressed their appreciation for PM Modi and India’s leadership role in the Indian Ocean. President Biden remarked that the US has much to learn from India’s experience and leadership in the region.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also praised Prime Minister Modi and expressed his support for Modi’s initiative to organize the Voice of Global South Summits, according to the sources.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described India as the predominant power in the Indian Ocean under PM Modi, commending his leadership.

“Quad – a force for global good. Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Quad Leaders’ Summit alongside President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to Quad cooperation for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Quad will continue to support the region’s development priorities and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a post on X.

Following a US request to host the Quad Summit this year, India agreed to host the next Quad Summit in 2025, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. India had initially been expected to host the summit this year, but scheduling conflicts among the leaders prevented it.

President Biden hosted the quadrilateral meeting and announced a series of initiatives aimed at delivering a real, positive impact for the Indo-Pacific, including providing new maritime technologies to Quad partners.

Earlier, ahead of the Quad summit, President Biden and Prime Minister Modi held a bilateral meeting. Both leaders affirmed that the U.S.-India Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership, which they described as the defining partnership of the 21st century, is successfully delivering on an ambitious agenda that serves the global good.

The leaders reflected on a historic period during which the United States and India have reached unprecedented levels of trust and collaboration. They affirmed that the U.S.-India partnership must be rooted in upholding democracy, freedom, the rule of law, human rights, pluralism, and equal opportunities for all, as both countries strive to become more perfect unions and fulfill their shared destiny.

The sixth edition of the Quad Leaders’ Summit serves as a ‘farewell’ summit for both U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida before they step down from their respective offices.
