Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday released ‘Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military’, outlining a long-term plan to transform India’s armed forces into a modern, integrated and technologically advanced force by the centenary year of Independence.
The vision document, prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, was unveiled during an event at South Block in New Delhi. The roadmap aims to strengthen the country’s military capabilities in line with India’s broader goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
According to the Defence Ministry, the blueprint focuses on strategic reforms, capability development and organisational changes required to address evolving geopolitical and security challenges. It envisions transforming the armed forces into an integrated, multi-domain and agile military capable of deterring adversaries and responding effectively across the full spectrum of conflict.
A central element of the document is greater jointness and synergy among the three services—Army, Navy and Air Force—to improve coordination in planning, operations and capability development. The roadmap also underscores the growing role of advanced technologies, innovation and modern training systems in preparing the military for future warfare.
The document further stresses the importance of self-reliance in defence under the government’s push for Aatmanirbharta. It calls for increased development and adoption of indigenous technologies and platforms suited to India’s security needs. Strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and technological capabilities is expected to enhance operational preparedness while also contributing to national growth.
The roadmap outlines a phased approach, identifying short-term, mid-term and long-term priorities for building critical military capabilities. This structured framework is intended to guide institutional reforms, technological advancement and strategic partnerships required for developing a world-class defence force.
Highlighting the changing nature of global security challenges, the document also emphasises a whole-of-nation approach to national security. It calls for closer integration of military strength with diplomatic, technological and economic capabilities to safeguard India’s expanding strategic interests.
By 2047, the roadmap aims to position India’s armed forces as a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready military contributing to the vision of a strong and resilient Viksit Bharat.
Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Air Staff AP Singh and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh were among the senior officials present at the release of the document.
