Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called on Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) to continue developing state-of-the-art maritime platforms in line with the rapidly evolving technology-driven era, stressing that the shipyard has a crucial role in achieving the government’s vision of a developed India under the Viksit Bharat@2047 initiative.
Addressing GRSE personnel in Kolkata on Thursday, Singh praised the shipyard’s contribution to nation-building and the growth of the Blue Economy. He described GRSE as an important chapter in India’s industrial and defence history, noting that for nearly 150 years it has equipped the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard with warships and frigates to safeguard the country’s maritime interests.
“When a modern warship built by you sails through the waves of the ocean, it is not just a structure of steel and machinery,” Singh said. “It represents the hard work of thousands of workers, the innovation of engineers, the precision of technicians, and the dedication of the shipyard towards the nation.”
He emphasised that every person working at GRSE plays a key role in the larger process of nation-building, describing them not merely as employees but as partners in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities.
Highlighting the shipyard’s achievements, the Defence Minister said GRSE has accomplished what many once considered impossible through hard work, skill and commitment. He encouraged the workforce to maintain the same spirit as India moves toward becoming a maritime power and a developed nation.
“New challenges will arise, new technologies will emerge, and competition will increase. But with the same dedication and commitment, GRSE will continue to shine as a symbol of shipbuilding excellence for India and the world,” he added.
The event also featured a cultural performance by GRSE personnel and their families, which Singh described as a reflection of India’s diversity, unity and rich cultural heritage.
The programme was attended by GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Commodore P.R. Hari (Retd) along with senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the shipyard.
