“Reform is key to relevance”: PM Modi calls for reforms in global institutions at UN Summit of Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the United Nations Summit of the Future at the UN General Assembly in New York and called for reforms in the global institutions and termed reforms the “key to relevance.” He also called the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member in the G20 an “important step” in this direction.

PM Modi underlined India’s willingness to share its successful initiatives with the Global South, advocating for unity over conflict. “When discussing the global future, we must prioritize a human-centric approach. While focusing on sustainable development, we must ensure that human welfare, food, and health security are not overlooked. By lifting 250 million people out of poverty in India, we have shown that sustainable development is achievable. We are prepared to share these experiences with the Global South. The strength of humanity lies in collective effort, not in conflict,” he said.

The Prime Minister also called for reforms in global institutions, pointing to the African Union’s new G20 membership as an example of progress. “For global peace and development, reforms in global institutions are necessary. Reform is the path to relevance,” he said.

Addressing global security, PM Modi described terrorism as a major threat, while noting that new challenges are emerging in areas like cyber, maritime, and space. He stressed the need for a coordinated international response, remarking, “Global action must align with global ambition.”

The Prime Minister also touched on the need for responsible use of technology, advocating for balanced regulation to ensure safety. “We need balanced regulation for the safe and responsible use of technology. India supports global digital governance that protects sovereignty and integrity,” he said. He emphasized India’s readiness to share its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for the benefit of all, adding, “DPI should act as a bridge, not a barrier. For India, the concept of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ remains a firm commitment.”

During the Summit, world leaders adopted a Pact for the Future, which included a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. This Pact encompasses themes such as peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and the transformation of global governance.
