Remembering Mukesh: The Timeless Voice That Defined an Era of Hindi Cinema

Even decades after his passing, Mukesh continues to be regarded as one of the greatest playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Born on July 22, 1923, his soulful voice became synonymous with emotion, simplicity and timeless melodies that continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

Mukesh carved a unique place in Hindi cinema with his ability to express love, longing, hope and heartbreak through song. His enduring association with actor Raj Kapoor remains one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actor-singer collaborations, with Mukesh becoming the unmistakable voice behind many of Kapoor’s iconic on-screen performances.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Mukesh delivered a remarkable repertoire of timeless songs that continue to resonate across generations. His memorable solo numbers include Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein, Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye, Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe Ho Nisar, Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon, Suhana Safar Aur Yeh Mausam Haseen, Duniya Bananewale, Sab Kuchh Seekha Humne and Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan. His philosophical and emotionally rich songs such as Ek Din Bik Jayega Mati Ke Mol, Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De, Yeh Mera Diwanapan Hai, Chal Akela Chal Akela and Dost Dost Na Raha remain among the most cherished classics of Hindi cinema.

Mukesh was equally admired for his duets, particularly those with Lata Mangeshkar. Songs such as Sawan Ka Mahina, Ek Pyar Ka Naghma Hai, Phool Tumhe Bheja Hai Khat Mein, Hum Tum Yug Yug Se and Dam Bhar Jo Udhar Munh Phere continue to occupy a special place in the hearts of music lovers.

His journey in cinema began with an acting role in Nirdosh (1941), but it was the playback song Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De from Pehli Nazar (1945), composed by Anil Biswas, that established him as a leading playback singer. Over the years, he collaborated with some of the greatest composers of Indian cinema, including Naushad, Anil Biswas, Shankar–Jaikishan and Khayyam, creating songs that have stood the test of time.

His remarkable contribution to Indian music earned him widespread recognition. Mukesh won four Filmfare Awards during his illustrious career, including honours for Sab Kuch Seekha Humne from Anari, Sabse Bada Nadan from Pehchan, Jai Bolo Beimaan Ki from Be-Imaan, and posthumously for Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein from Kabhi Kabhie. In 1974, he was conferred the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to Indian music.

Mukesh passed away on August 27, 1976, after suffering a heart attack while on a concert tour in Detroit, United States. Though his life was cut short, his music continues to transcend time, remaining a cherished part of India’s cultural legacy.

Carrying forward his father’s rich musical tradition, Nitin Mukesh emerged as a successful playback singer during the 1980s and 1990s. He collaborated with renowned music directors including Khayyam, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem–Shravan and Anand–Milind. Some of his best-known songs include So Gaya Ye Jahan, Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi and Wafa Na Raas Aaye Tujhe O Harjai.
