“Reopening Taj Hotel after 26/11 showed India’s refusal to yield to terrorism” says PM Modi in OpEd on Ratan Tata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata in a heartfelt op-ed on Saturday, marking one month since Tata’s passing. Recalling Tata’s lasting impact on India and the world, PM Modi highlighted his unshakable patriotism, notably demonstrated during national crises.

PM Modi reflected on Tata’s quick decision to reopen Mumbai’s iconic Taj Hotel after the devastating 26/11 terror attacks, underscoring the act as a powerful message of resilience and India’s refusal to yield to terrorism. “For millions of Indians, Shri Ratan Tata’s patriotism shone brightest in times of crisis,” PM Modi wrote. “The swift reopening of the iconic Taj Hotel was a rallying call to the nation—India stands united, refusing to bow down to terrorism.”

Remembering his own personal connection with Tata, PM Modi shared memories of their collaborations on projects in Gujarat, particularly emphasizing Tata’s extensive investments in the state. He recalled their joint efforts, including the recent inauguration of an aircraft manufacturing complex in Vadodara with Spain, a project Tata had initiated but, sadly, could not witness.

“On a personal note, I had the privilege of knowing him very closely over the years. We worked closely in Gujarat, where he invested extensively, including in many of the projects was very passionate about. Just a few weeks ago, I was in Vadodara with the President of the Government of Spain, Mr. Pedro Sanchez and we jointly inaugurated an aircraft complex where C-295 aircrafts would be made in India. It was Shri Ratan Tata who started working on this. Needless to say, Shri Ratan Tata’s presence was greatly missed” PM Modi said.

PM Modi’s tribute also celebrated Tata’s compassion and philanthropy, which extended beyond business success. Known for his love of animals and commitment to social causes, Tata’s contributions included not only corporate excellence but also extensive support for human and animal welfare. PM Modi said that Tata’s dedication to the Swachh Bharat Mission, recalling Tata’s support for cleanliness and sanitation, which he saw as essential to India’s progress.

“For the youth, Shri Ratan Tata was an inspiration, showing that dreams are worth pursuing and that success can coexist with compassion and humility,” PM Modi said. “Under his leadership, the Tata Group soared, embodying values of respect, honesty, and credibility on a global scale.”

Reflecting on Ratan Tata’s enduring legacy, PM Modi expressed that Tata’s vision will continue to inspire future generations to pursue not only economic success but also societal well-being. “As we remember him today, we are reminded of the society he envisioned—where business serves as a force for good, valuing every individual’s potential, and measuring progress in the happiness and well-being of all.”

“As we remember him today, we are reminded of the society he envisioned–where business can serve as a force for good, where every individual’s potential is valued and where progress is measured in the well-being and happiness of all. He remains alive in the lives he touched and the dreams he nurtured. Generations will be grateful to him for making India a better, kinder and more hopeful place” PM Modi said.
