India Cricket team captain Rohit Sharma exuded confidence ahead of his team’s ICC tournament semifinal clash against Australia, emphasising process over revenge despite their previous defeat to the same opposition in the 2023 World Cup final.
“It’s a great opposition to play against,” Sharma said during Monday’s press conference in Dubai. “Australia has been a great team over the years. We expect some fightbacks and some nervy moments in the middle.”
When asked if facing Australia in the semifinals provided extra motivation following their 2023 World Cup final loss, he remained measured. “All we need to do is stick to what we’ve been focusing on in the last three games. We have to approach this match in a similar fashion,” he explained.
The Indian skipper acknowledged the pressure of knockout cricket but stressed the importance of execution over the opposition. “Obviously, the pressure is on both teams to win. But it’s important for us to focus on what we need to do, keep executing our plans, and get the basics right. The results will follow if we stick to what we are supposed to do.”
Rohit Sharma also addressed India’s bowling strategy against Australia’s formidable batting lineup, particularly the possibility of retaining the four-spinner approach that had proven effective in the group stage.
“We need to consider whether playing four spinners is viable and how we can fit them in. If it’s not, then we’ll adjust accordingly,” he said. “We’ll assess the conditions and analyze Australia’s batting lineup to determine the best bowling combination against them.”
With uncertainty over which pitch will be used for the semifinal at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Indian captain emphasised the need for adaptability. “We don’t know which pitch will be used, but whatever happens, we have to adapt and respond to the conditions.”The semifinal between India and Australia is set for March 4, at Dubai, with the winner advancing to the tournament final.
