Sensex, Nifty end flat as investors await U.S. economic data

India’s benchmark indices ended flat on Tuesday, following record highs in the previous session. Investors are awaiting the U.S. ISM manufacturing survey due later in the day and jobs data on Friday, which are expected to influence the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision on potential rate cuts.

The BSE Sensex fell by 4.40 points, or 0.01 percent, to close at 82,555.44. The Nifty 50, on the other hand, inched up by 1.10 points to 25,279.80.

Market breadth was fairly balanced with 1,909 stocks advancing, 1,857 declining, and 113 remaining unchanged.

Among the top gainers on the Nifty 50 were SBI Life Insurance, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life, Shriram Finance, and Bajaj Finserv. ONGC, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, JSW Steel, and Adani Ports were among the biggest laggards.

Sectoral indices showed mixed performance. While the banking and capital goods sectors rose by 0.5 percent each, the media, power, metals, realty, and oil & gas sectors saw declines ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 percent.

The BSE midcap index recorded marginal gains, and the smallcap index rose by 0.5 percent.
