Sensex sheds 220 pts, Nifty closes below 22,900

After reaching record highs in the previous session, Indian benchmark indices consolidated on May 28. At closing, the Sensex fell by 220.05 points (0.29%) to 75,170.45, and the Nifty dropped by 44.30 points (0.19%) to 22,888.15.

The market started positively but fluctuated between gains and losses throughout the day. However, a sell-off in the last hour pushed the indices to their lowest points of the day.

The biggest losers on the Nifty were Adani Ports, Power Grid Corp, Coal India, Adani Enterprises, and BPCL. The top gainers included Divis Laboratories, SBI Life Insurance, HDFC Life, Grasim Industries, and Hero MotoCorp.

Sector-wise, Oil & Gas, Capital Goods, Telecom, PSU Bank, Power, and Realty dropped 1-2%, while the pharma index rose by 0.5%.

The BSE Midcap index declined by 0.5%, and the Smallcap index fell by 1%.

Notable individual stock movements included volume spikes of over 1,100% in Nalco, India Cements, and Bandhan Bank.

Over 150 stocks on the BSE hit their 52-week highs, including Divis Labs, Hero MotoCorp, Exide Industries, Glenmark Pharma, Muthoot Finance, Oberoi Realty, Power Finance, Ashok Leyland, Schaeffler India, Aditya Birla Fashion, and Bharat Forge.
