Mizoram Assembly Elections: Counting of votes begins under tight security

The counting of votes for the assembly elections in Mizoram began at 8 am on Monday amidst tight security measures. According to officials, the counting is being conducted in 13 centres across the state, with postal ballots being counted first, followed by votes cast in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Originally scheduled for Sunday, the counting was postponed by the Election Commission in response to appeals made by various political parties, NGOs, churches, and student bodies. This decision was made due to the significance of Sundays for the people of Mizoram, a state with a Christian majority.

A total of 4,000 counting personnel will be involved in the process, with 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables set up in the 13 counting centers and 40 counting halls. The peaceful polling on November 7 recorded a voter turnout of over 80%, with female voters participating at a slightly higher rate than male voters. A total of 174 candidates contested for the 40 assembly seats in all 11 districts of the state.
