T20 WC: Motie, Chase spin West Indies to 30-run win over England after Rutherford’s 76

Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase shared five wickets as West Indies beat England by 30 runs in Match 15 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, after Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 76 powered them to 196/6.

Motie returned figures of 3-33 and Chase took 2-29 as England were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs while chasing 197. The win lifted West Indies to the top of Group C with four points, while England slipped to third behind Scotland on net run rate.

England made a brisk start, with Phil Salt (30 off 14) and Jos Buttler (21 off 14) putting on 38 for the opening wicket as they reached 67/1 at the end of the Powerplay. But the innings unravelled against spin as Motie removed Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell to reduce them to 90/4.

Harry Brook (17) and Sam Curran added 41 for the fifth wicket, but Motie struck again to dismiss Brook. Curran fought on for 43 not out off 30 balls, but England lost wickets in clusters, slipping to 151/8 before being bowled out.

Earlier, England had reduced West Indies to 8/2 inside two overs through Jofra Archer and Curran. Roston Chase (34) and Shimron Hetmyer (23) steadied the innings with a 47-run stand before both fell, leaving West Indies at 77/4.

Rutherford then took control. He shared a 51-run partnership with Rovman Powell and added 61 with Jason Holder (33 off 17), accelerating sharply in the death overs. Rutherford reached his fifty off 29 balls and finished unbeaten on 76 from 42 deliveries, striking six off the final ball of the innings.

Adil Rashid was England’s most economical bowler with 2-16, while Jamie Overton claimed 2-33.

Brief scores: West Indies 196/6 (Rutherford 76 not out, Chase 34; Rashid 2-16) beat England 166 all out (Curran 43 not out; Motie 3-33, Chase 2-29) by 30 runs.
