Scotland opened their Group C campaign of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a commanding 73-run win over debutants Italy at the Eden Gardens on Monday.
Batting first, Scotland posted 207 for four, riding on a fluent 84 from George Munsey and useful contributions from Brandon McMullen (41) and Michael Leask (22 not out). Italy, chasing 208, were bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs.
Italy’s chase faltered early after Justin Mosca was dismissed for a golden duck. Anthony Mosca (13) and JJ Smuts (22 off 11) showed brief intent, but regular wickets prevented any sustained partnership.
The Manenti brothers offered some resistance, with Harry Manenti scoring 37 off 25 balls and Ben Manenti top-scoring with 52 off 31. However, the required run rate climbed steadily, and the innings fell away once both were dismissed.
Michael Leask led Scotland’s bowling effort with figures of 4 for 17, while Mark Watt claimed two wickets. Brad Currie, Brad Wheal and Oliver Davidson maintained pressure throughout the innings.
Earlier, Munsey and Michael Jones (37) laid the foundation with a 126-run opening stand. Scotland accelerated in the latter stages, with skipper Richie Berrington and McMullen adding momentum before Leask struck 22 runs in the final over.
Italy were effectively a batter short after their captain dislocated his shoulder while fielding in the first innings.
