Indian Railways records best safety performance in decades; annual accidents fall from 171 to 11

Indian Railways has reported its strongest safety performance in decades, with the number of annual consequential train accidents dropping sharply from an average of 171 between 2004 and 2014 to 31 in 2024–25 and just 11 so far in 2025–26. Indian Railways expands AI-based intrusion detection to prevent elephant collisions across key routes

Indian Railways has scaled up the deployment of its artificial intelligence-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to curb elephant fatalities on rail tracks, with the technology now active across 141 route kilometres (RKms) of the Northeast Frontier Railway and tenders awarded for an additional 981 RKms nationwide.
