Ukraine hits Russia with US ATACMS missiles for first time on war’s 1,000th day

Ukraine used U.S. ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory on Tuesday, taking advantage of newly granted permission from the outgoing administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on the war's 1,000th day. Russia said its forces shot down five of six missiles fired at a military facility in the Bryansk region. Debris of one hit the facility, starting a fire that was swiftly put out and caused no casualties or damage, it said. Ukraine said it struck a Russian arms depot about 110 km (70 miles) ...

Putin issues warning to United States with new nuclear doctrine

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning to the United States on Tuesday, lowering the threshold for a nuclear strike just days after the administration of Joe Biden reportedly allowed Ukraine to fire American missiles deep into Russia. Ukraine, marking 1,000 days of Russian invasion, eyes end to war next year

Ukraine marked 1,000 days on Tuesday since Russia's full-scale invasion, with weary troops battling on numerous fronts, Kyiv besieged by frequent drone and missile strikes, and officials preparing for Donald Trump to reclaim the White House in January. In a boost for the beleaguered country, U.S. President Joe Biden gave the green light for U.S. missiles to be used against targets deeper inside Russia, potentially limiting its options to launch attacks and supply the front. But the dramatic sh...

How 1,000 days of conflict fuelled robot wars between Russia and Ukraine

When Yuriy Shelmuk co-founded a company last year making drone signal jammers, he said there was little interest in the devices. It now produces 2,500 a month and has a six-week waiting list. Demand shifted after the failure of a major Ukrainian counteroffensive in the summer of 2023 that was meant to put invading Russian forces on the back foot. Kyiv cited Russia's extensive use of unmanned aerial vehicles to spot and strike targets, as well as vast numbers of landmines and troops. "Conce...

Why Russia – North Korea friendship upsets China

There’s bromance in the air and it’s between two unlikely pals — Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin. But, it has upset some, including, guess who, Xi Jinping. The Kim — Putin Bromance is the subject of much discussion and speculation. Kim’s 3 a.m. hug of Putin on the tarmac; gifting him two Pungsan dogs; and Putin in turn presenting Kim with a Russian-make Aurus limousine and taking Kim for a spin in it: Their carefully-choreographed appearances project a sense of camaraderie and bonhomie...

Russia floats idea of ‘reset’ with United States after Trump declares victory

New opportunities to reset relations between Moscow and Washington have opened up, the influential head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund said on Wednesday after Donald Trump declared victory in the U.S. presidential election. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when the Soviet Union and the U.S. came close to nuclear war. Both Russian and U.S. diplomats say relations between the world's two la...
