Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the National Awardee Teachers in New Delhi, lauding their role in nation-building and emphasizing the pivotal impact of educators in shaping India’s future.

Calling teachers a “powerful force in nation-building,” PM Modi said that honoring them is not merely ceremonial but a recognition of their lifelong dedication and societal contribution. He congratulated the awardees, noting that millions of teachers across India demonstrate commitment, sincerity, and a spirit of service.

Highlighting India’s revered Guru-Shishya tradition, PM Modi said, “Teachers like you are living embodiments of this heritage. You are not only imparting literacy but also instilling the spirit of living for the nation in the younger generation.” He added that teachers form the foundation of a strong nation and an empowered society, while also being sensitive to evolving educational demands and curricular reforms.

The Prime Minister underscored the latest phase of GST reforms, calling it a historic step in India’s economic transformation. Termed by some as “GST 2.0,” the reforms simplify the tax system with primarily two slabs of 5% and 18%, effective from September 22. PM Modi said these measures will provide substantial relief to households, farmers, youth, and middle-class families, reducing costs on essential goods, vehicles, appliances, and healthcare.

“Before 2014, basic goods and services carried taxes ranging from 17% to 28%. Today, items like cement, ACs, TVs, and tractors are taxed at 18%, 5%, or even 0%, easing household and farming expenses,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving affordability, boosting savings, and promoting economic growth.

PM Modi also urged teachers to instill the values of self-reliance and ‘Vocal for Local’ in students. He emphasized awareness of imported versus indigenous products, encouraging school projects and activities celebrating Indian-made goods. “Students should ask themselves, ‘What can I give to my country?’ and connect personal success to national progress,” he said, citing Mahatma Gandhi’s Swadeshi legacy.

Highlighting youth empowerment, PM Modi praised the growing interest in science, innovation, and technology among students, referencing the success of Chandrayaan missions. He pointed to over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs and the government’s approval of 50,000 more to nurture innovation, urging teachers to guide the next generation of innovators.

On digital empowerment, the Prime Minister highlighted the recently passed law regulating online gaming, protecting students from exploitative content while promoting opportunities in the gaming sector. He encouraged teachers to raise awareness among students about responsible digital engagement and emerging career options.

Concluding his address, PM Modi reaffirmed the government’s vision of building a Viksit Bharat through education, self-reliance, and youth empowerment. He expressed confidence that teachers would continue to play a transformative role in nation-building and congratulated all awardees for their exemplary contributions.
