On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to countering terrorist threats, asserting that any terrorist organization challenging India’s security will receive a “befitting reply.” Speaking at a special event at the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the Indian Constitution, marking its 75th year and highlighting its guiding role in shaping the nation’s present and future.
Reflecting on the Constitution’s enduring relevance, PM Modi described it as a “vibrant, constantly flowing stream.” He said that the Constitution is not just a historical document but a living guide that continues to shape India’s policies, ensuring the welfare of citizens and facilitating ease of living. The Prime Minister also stressed the government’s ongoing efforts to implement policies in alignment with the spirit of the Constitution.
In his speech, PM Modi recalled the tragic Mumbai terror attack of 2008, which occurred on Constitution Day, and paid tribute to those who lost their lives. He underscored the nation’s resolve to confront terrorism, adding, “Every terrorist organization challenging the security of India will get a befitting reply.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted various initiatives that reflect the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life. Citing the Digital Life Certificate, a facility that enables senior citizens to confirm their pensions online without having to visit banks in person, PM Modi pointed out that around 1.5 crore senior citizens have benefited from the service.
Continuing his focus on welfare, PM Modi mentioned the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which has now expanded to cover citizens over the age of 70. He also emphasized the importance of accessible tap water, noting that while it may seem commonplace today, only three crore households had access to it even after 75 years of independence.
On the cultural and moral foundation of India, PM Modi referred to the original copy of the Constitution, which includes images of Lord Ram and Mother Sita. These images, he explained, symbolize the core human values that continue to guide India’s policies and decisions today.
The Prime Minister also addressed challenges to the Constitution, particularly referencing the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government. He reflected on his government’s historic decision to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which he said ensured full implementation of the Constitution in the region. “It’s the power of the Constitution that today, in Jammu and Kashmir, Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution is fully implemented,” he said.
PM Modi acknowledged the significant transformation India is undergoing, with the Constitution serving as a beacon during this period of change. He quoted Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who famously stated during the Constituent Assembly debates, “The Constitution is not a mere lawyer’s document. Its spirit is always the spirit of age.” This spirit, according to the Prime Minister, continues to guide India’s progress.
During the Constitution Day celebrations, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna presented a painting made by a prisoner from Tihar Jail to PM Modi. The Prime Minister also released the Annual Report of the Indian Judiciary 2023-24, marking another significant milestone in the country’s judicial journey.
