Third child diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Jharkhand, state on alert

A third child displaying symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has been admitted to a hospital in Ranchi, bringing the total number of suspected cases in Jharkhand to three. While two children are receiving treatment at private hospitals, one has been admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. The state health department’s surveillance team is actively monitoring the condition of all three patients, and civil surgeons across the state have been alerted to remain vigilant.

The first reported case of GBS in Jharkhand emerged approximately ten days ago when a five-year-old girl was diagnosed with the syndrome at a private children’s hospital in Booty Mor, Ranchi. While doctors have noted slight improvements in her condition, she remains bedridden. A second case emerged five days ago when a girl from Koderma was admitted to RIMS after falling seriously ill, exhibiting symptoms of nervous system failure upon returning from a trip to Maharashtra with her family. Both children had recently traveled to Maharashtra before their health deteriorated.

Following the initial diagnosis on January 31, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren convened a high-level meeting with the Health Minister and senior officials to address the situation. Deputy commissioners and civil surgeons from across the state participated in the meeting via video conferencing. The Chief Minister directed health officials to ensure immediate diagnosis and treatment for anyone exhibiting symptoms of GBS.

As a precautionary measure, the state government has set up special wards at hospitals across Jharkhand, ensuring the availability of ventilators, oxygen supplies, and essential medicines in these wards. RIMS Director Dr. Rajkumar stressed that while GBS is not contagious, timely treatment is essential for recovery. He also highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about the disorder.

Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome have also been reported in other states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan. GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the nervous system and can lead to paralysis in severe cases. Medical experts explain that while the condition can be triggered by infections such as bacterial diarrhea or viral infections like dengue or chikungunya, most patients recover fully with appropriate and timely treatment.

The latest reported cases have prompted authorities to remain on high alert, as health officials continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary care to those affected.
