“This is encouraging to see!”: PM Modi lauds India’s performance in QS World University rankings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended India’s performance in the latest QS World University Rankings, highlighting the government’s focus on “research, learning and innovation in a big way.”

India emerged as the top-performing nation among G20 countries in the latest QS World University Rankings, with its universities recording a 14% year-on-year improvement in the average ranking.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, President of Quacquarelli Symonds, said in a LinkedIn post on Monday that India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest growing research centres.

Responding to Quacquarelli, PM Modi said: “This is encouraging to see! Our Government is focussing on research, learning and innovation in a big way. In the coming times, this emphasis will deepen even further, thus benefitting our Yuva Shakti.”

In his post, Quacquarelli highlighted the remarkable 54% surge in research output in India from 2017 to 2022, making it the fourth-largest producer of research globally.

He attributed the improvement in India’s ranking and progress in the education sector to government initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“I had the honour of meeting the Prime Minister to discuss global higher education trends. During our engaging conversation, it was evident that PM Modi has a passionate commitment to revolutionise Indian education, reflected in the ambitious targets within the NEP,” he wrote.

India now ranks prominently across 44 out of the 55 QS Subject Rankings. Standout performances were noted in Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Business Studies, and Physics, among others.

The Institutes of Eminence (IoE) figured in 47 of the 69 Indian university positions within the top-100 in any of the Subject Rankings. Across Asia, India now holds the second-highest number of featured universities in the QS Subject Rankings, behind China.
