Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took to social media to share pictures from his meeting with renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja, lauding him for his recent symphony performance in London.
Sharing several pictures on X, PM Modi expressed his admiration for the legendary composer. “Delighted to meet Rajya Sabha MP Thiru Ilaiyaraaja Ji, a musical titan whose genius has a monumental impact on our music and culture,” he wrote.
He further praised Ilaiyaraaja’s latest accomplishment: “He is a trailblazer in every sense and made history yet again by presenting his first-ever Western classical symphony, ‘Valiant,’ in London a few days ago. This performance, accompanied by the world-renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, marks another milestone in his unparalleled musical journey—one that continues to redefine excellence on a global scale.”
Ilaiyaraaja also shared his thoughts on X, writing, “A memorable meeting with Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji. We spoke about many things, including my Symphony ‘Valiant.’ Humbled by his appreciation and support. @OneMercuri.”
Upon his return from London on March 10, Ilaiyaraaja received a grand welcome at Chennai Airport from political and cultural figures, including Tamil Nadu Minister Thangam Thenarasu, BJP State Vice President Karu Nagarajan, and VCK functionary Vanni Arasu.
Minister Thangam Thenarasu, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, honored Ilaiyaraaja for his contributions to Indian and global music. BJP’s Karu Nagarajan and VCK’s Vanni Arasu also extended their greetings, celebrating the maestro’s exceptional career.
Speaking to the media, Ilaiyaraaja expressed his gratitude to his supporters, particularly his fans in London. “Thanks to everyone. You all sent me off with smiling faces, which made the event hugely successful. The love I received from the fans during the Symphony was overwhelming. Every moment there was filled with appreciation from the audience,” he said.
Ilaiyaraaja, widely regarded as one of India’s greatest music composers, has left an indelible mark on the industry, particularly in Tamil and Telugu cinema.
Born as R. Gnanathesikan in 1943 in Pannaipuram, Theni district, Ilaiyaraaja began his musical journey at a young age. Over four decades, he has composed music for more than a thousand films, blending folk rhythms with classical techniques to create a distinctive sound that continues to captivate audiences.
His compositions are not just musical masterpieces but also reflect deep cultural and social themes, often carrying powerful political messages.
Some of Ilaiyaraaja’s most memorable compositions include, Machana Pathingala (Annakili, 1975) – Marking his debut in Tamil cinema, this song seamlessly blends folk rhythms with contemporary film music. Metti Oli Kaatrodu (Metti, 1980) – Sung by Janaki, this song remains a favorite for its enchanting lyrics and melody. Thenpaandi Cheemayile (Nayagan, 1987) – A deeply emotional classic that continues to resonate with listeners. Janani Janani (Thaai Moogambhigai, 1982) – A devotional anthem cherished by devotees even today. Uravugal Thodarkathai (Aval Appadithan, 1978) – Sung by K. J. Yesudas, this melody highlights Ilaiyaraaja’s mastery over emotion-laden music.
