Tribeca Film Festival kicks off with a documentary about designer Diane von Furstenberg

The 23rd Tribeca Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday (June 5), with the premiere of the new documentary, “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.” The film offers a glimpse into the life and career of the legendary fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary follows von Furstenberg as she prepares for a museum exhibition dedicated to her lifetime of work.

Von Furstenberg’s hope for the documentary is as inspiring as her storied career.

“I’ve had a wonderful life, and hopefully this movie will be inspiring for a lot of young girls to know that they can dream and make it happen,” she shared.

Journalist Gayle King, who moderated a conversation following the film’s premiere, highlighted von Furstenberg’s drive.

“You’re going to see that she was ahead of her time. I’ve always known that, but when it’s detailed the way it is in this documentary, she’s way ahead of her time,” King said.

Festival jury member Lucy Hale, Selma Blair and Brian Tee also attended the opening night event.

The Tribeca Festival, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, will run from June 5–16, 2024, in New York City.

Originally established to stimulate the economic and cultural recovery of lower Manhattan after the World Trade Center attacks, Tribeca has grown into a space for both emerging and established voices in film, TV, music, audio storytelling, games, and immersive experiences.
