Trump talks Trade, Tech, Taiwan and AI with Xi; no breakthrough

In the space of a single day, the world’s two most powerful leaders sat down in the Oval Office to rewrite the script of great-power rivalry. Donald Trump rolled out the red carpet for Xi Jinping. The result? High drama, careful choreography but no outcome documents.

For sure, pomp and pageantry marked the Summit. On 24th September, Xi arrived for the first State visit to Washington, D.C. in over a decade. Trump took the rare step of greeting him personally on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews. The next day, the two men held Oval Office talks lasting over three hours followed by a glittering State dinner packed with tech titans.

Trump pulled out all the stops; offering a tour of the Presidential helicopter and gifting Xi a bald-eagle statue. Yet, the spectacle masked a thinner diplomatic reality. There was no joint statement; no joint press conference either. The crucial talks remained completely closed to the media.

This absence of a joint readout is telling but what stood out most was the dramatic pivot by Trump. In early 2025, Trump was dragging China into the Panama Canal dispute, bringing up the Fentanyl crisis, targeting TikTok and threatening China with tariffs.

Fast forward to this week. The language is warm and the focus has shifted entirely to managing their competition.

Before Xi’s plane even landed, Beijing laid down four strict red lines: Taiwan, democracy and human rights, China’s development path and its right to pursue its own interests.

On Taiwan, the most contentious flashpoint — Xi was direct. Chinese State media reports that he he warned the U.S. to handle the matter with prudence, oppose Taiwan independence, and halt multi-billion-dollar weapons packages. Trump, who previously paused a 14-billion-dollar arms-sale to use as a negotiating chip, made no public commitments. The package remains under review.

On trade, the outcome was modest. The existing trade truce was extended by just two months, until 10th January 2027. Despite Trump’s push for China to buy more U.S.-made Boeing planes and farm produce, this visit produced no concrete buying commitments.

Technology also remains a source of stalemate to be managed. The U.S. maintains strict export controls on advanced semiconductors while China holds immense leverage over critical rare earth minerals.

Artificial Intelligence was discussed, too. Trump preferred a hands-off approach but Xi struck a different note, arguing that China and the U.S. have a responsibility to keep A.I. under strict human control.

The only immediate deliverables? An invitation for 1,00,000 young Americans to study in China, the gifting of two Giant Pandas to a U.S. zoo. and Trump and Xi agreeing to replace the term “Artificial Intelligence” with “SUPER Intelligence”. They decided to set up a U.S. — China Super Intelligence Dialogue to exchange views on benefits and risks of this technology. They also agreed on a hotline specifically for reporting and managing urgent technology incidents or accidents that could otherwise trigger a national-security crisis.

So what is the ultimate takeaway? It was a summit heavy on ceremony but light on breakthroughs. We saw a brief trade extension, panda diplomacy and warm personal rhetoric. Yet, hard, national positions on Taiwan and Tech remain entirely unchanged.

The U.S. — China relationship is not being “Reset”. Far from it. It is being managed — carefully, publicly and with both sides watching every single move.

This is a story that will keep unfolding.
