UAE leaders order release of thousands of prisoners ahead of 54th Union Day

The UAE’s leaders have ordered the release of thousands of inmates across the country ahead of the 54th Union Day, marking one of the largest collective pardons in recent years.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the release of 2,937 inmates from correctional facilities nationwide and approved the settlement of fines imposed on them. The gesture aims to give those pardoned an opportunity to rebuild their lives and rejoin their families and communities.In Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the release of 2,025 prisoners of various nationalities. Dubai’s Attorney General, Essam Issa Al Humaidan, said the directive reflects the Ruler’s commitment to enabling inmates to begin afresh. He confirmed that legal procedures to implement the order have already begun in coordination with Dubai Police.

Across the northern emirates, similar directives were issued to mark the national occasion. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, ordered the release of 366 inmates, while Ajman Ruler Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi pardoned 225 prisoners. Fujairah’s Ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, approved the release of 129 inmates. In Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi ordered the release of 854 prisoners.The annual pardons, issued ahead of major national celebrations, are intended to support rehabilitation efforts and offer eligible inmates a chance for social reintegration
