UIDAI launches new Aadhaar App with enhanced security and privacy features

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Wednesday launched a new and advanced Aadhaar app, marking a step forward in India’s digital identity ecosystem. The app was formally unveiled in the presence of Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada.

According to UIDAI, the new app is designed to be more secure, faster, and privacy-focused than the existing mAadhaar app. It allows limited and need-based data sharing, giving users greater control over their personal information.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar said that identity verification has become a routine requirement in everyday situations such as renting a house, staying at hotels, or accessing services. Earlier, people had to carry multiple physical identity documents, which could be outdated or vulnerable to misuse. With the new Aadhaar app, digitally signed identity credentials issued by UIDAI will be treated as verified, making the verification process faster and more reliable.

He added that the app supports direct app-to-app verification, enabling service providers to confirm identity instantly without additional procedures. The “show and share” feature removes the need to carry printed copies of Aadhaar, allowing users to present digital credentials on their mobile phones at places like airports and hotels.

Jitin Prasada said that Aadhaar has become a global reference point for digital identity systems, with more than 125 crore Indians now covered under the programme. He said the new app is voluntary and has privacy safeguards built into its design, aimed at simplifying processes for citizens and strengthening India’s digital capabilities.

He also said that India’s digital identity framework has demonstrated how large-scale systems can operate efficiently while safeguarding data. Referring to the India–EU Free Trade Agreement, Prasada said that such agreements reflect growing global confidence in India’s technological and digital strengths.

He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s digital and technological progress is gaining recognition worldwide, positioning the country as a key provider of digital and advanced services.
