United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday spoke separately with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, condemning last week’s deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir and urging both countries to avoid further escalation.
Guterres stressed the importance of justice and accountability “through lawful means,” the UN said in a statement.
He also expressed deep concern over rising tensions between India and Pakistan, underscoring the need to avoid confrontation that could lead to tragic consequences. The Secretary-General offered his Good Offices to support de-escalation efforts, the statement added.
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with senior defence and security officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan.
The meeting followed a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) session held on April 23, during which India announced the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, citing the need for Islamabad to ‘credibly and irreversibly’ end its support for cross-border terrorism. New Delhi also ordered the closure of the integrated Attari border check post and revoked visas for Pakistani nationals.
