‘Unwavering commitment to building robust, self-reliant defence sector’, PM Modi dedicates naval combatants to nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated three frontline naval combatants — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — to the nation during a commissioning ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

“These naval combatants will strengthen our efforts to become a global leader in defence and further our pursuit of self-reliance,” PM Modi said. He emphasized that their commissioning reflects India’s commitment to building a robust and self-reliant defence sector.

The event was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, among other dignitaries.

The commissioning of these naval vessels marks a major milestone in India’s vision of becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing and maritime security, as highlighted by a government press release. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, these combatants embody the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and represent a modern, combat-ready force.

INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, ranking among the world’s largest and most sophisticated destroyers. With 75 percent indigenous content, it is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon systems, sensor packages, and advanced network-centric capabilities, supporting helicopter operations and enhanced combat efficiency.

INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. Incorporating cutting-edge stealth technologies, improved radar signatures, and multi-role capabilities, the frigate represents the next generation of indigenous frigates, featuring modern aviation facilities and enhanced survivability.

INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, reflects India’s growing expertise in submarine construction. Built in collaboration with the Naval Group of France, it is a Scorpene-class submarine known for its stealth and versatility in missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. The submarine is equipped with advanced sonar and missile systems.
