UPI: From a digital payment platform to an engine of India’s digital transformation

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s digital transformation has emerged as a powerful example of how technology can be harnessed to make everyday life simpler, faster and more inclusive. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), one of the flagship initiatives of this transformation, reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of building a digitally empowered and financially inclusive India. Since its launch in 2016, UPI has grown from a nascent payment platform into a globally recognised digital public infrastructure, fundamentally changing the way Indians transact.

The scale of this transformation is remarkable. Annual UPI transactions have risen from just 2 crore in 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in 2025-26, while their value has increased from ₹0.07 lakh crore to around ₹314 lakh crore. These figures are not merely indicators of technological growth, they demonstrate the extraordinary adoption of digital payments across India and the growing integration of technology into the country’s economic life.

What makes UPI particularly significant is that its success has been built around simplicity, interoperability and accessibility. From small-value payments by ordinary citizens to large commercial transactions, UPI has made instant digital payments a part of everyday life. Its expanding ecosystem, supported by hundreds of banks and a range of innovative features, has helped take digital payments well beyond metropolitan centres.

The latest figures underline the unprecedented scale of this transformation. In July 2026 alone, UPI processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth ₹29.87 lakh crore, with 741 banks connected to the ecosystem. The journey from just 21 member banks at its inception to this enormous network illustrates how effectively India has built and scaled digital public infrastructure.

UPI has also played an important role in advancing financial inclusion. Innovations such as UPI 123PAY, UPI Lite, UPI AutoPay, UPI Circle and credit lines on UPI have expanded the range of users and use cases. These initiatives demonstrate that India’s digital payment revolution is not confined to smartphones or affluent consumers, it is increasingly designed to accommodate diverse sections of society.

The global acceptance of UPI is another important milestone. The platform is now available in 11 foreign countries for payment acceptance and/or cross-border remittances. Its growing international footprint demonstrates the increasing global relevance of India’s digital payment architecture. The International Monetary Fund’s recognition of UPI’s contribution to global real-time payment volumes further underlines its international significance.

The Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been consistently strengthening the digital payments ecosystem, with a strong focus on cybersecurity, fraud prevention, consumer awareness, data protection and system resilience. As UPI continues to expand, these efforts are being further enhanced to ensure that the platform remains secure, reliable and convenient for citizens while sustaining its remarkable growth.

UPI’s journey over the past decade is therefore much more than the story of a successful payment platform. It is a reflection of India’s broader digital transformation and the Narendra Modi government’s emphasis on technology-led inclusion and citizen-centric governance. From 2 crore transactions in 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in 2025-26, UPI has demonstrated how a well-designed digital public infrastructure can transform economic behaviour at population scale.

The next phase should build on this foundation by making UPI even more secure, inclusive and globally interoperable. If its first decade established UPI as the backbone of India’s digital payments ecosystem, its next decade can further strengthen India’s position as a global leader in digital public infrastructure and innovation.
