US President Trump invites PM Modi to White House for high-level talks

US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a working visit to the White House next week, a senior White House official confirmed to The Hill on Wednesday.

The visit, scheduled to last two days, follows a recent phone call between the two leaders on January 27. The discussion reportedly covered key regional and global issues, including security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Europe.

A White House statement highlighted that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the US-India strategic partnership. President Trump emphasized the importance of India enhancing its procurement of American-made security equipment and advancing fair bilateral trade relations.

“President Donald J. Trump held a productive call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation and plans for Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the White House. They also reiterated their shared vision for the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India set to host Quad Leaders for the first time later this year,” the statement said.

The announcement coincides with heightened immigration tensions between the two nations. Earlier in the day, a US Air Force plane carrying Indian citizens allegedly involved in illegal migration landed in Amritsar, Punjab.

A spokesperson for the US Embassy stressed that while specific details cannot be disclosed, the US remains committed to “vigorously enforcing its border and immigration laws,” warning that illegal migration is not worth the risk.
