Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology , Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Thursday inaugurated TDK Corporation’s lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant at Sohna in Haryana, calling it a “major milestone” in India’s electronics journey.
The facility, set up under the Centre’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme, will produce around 20 crore battery packs annually — nearly 40 per cent of the country’s requirement — and create 5,000 direct jobs. The batteries will cater to mobile phones, laptops, smartwatches, earbuds and other consumer devices.
“This is a very important milestone for us as we fulfil the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Whether it is camera modules, PCB assembly, semiconductors or batteries — every component will be manufactured in our country over the coming years,” Vaishnaw said at the launch.
The Minister underlined that the first made-in-India chips were presented to the Prime Minister earlier this year at Semicon India 2025. “With each milestone — whether in semiconductors, batteries, PCB assemblies or camera modules — India is moving closer to becoming a global hub for electronics production,” he added.
The Haryana government has supported the project, with training of workers already underway at the AT Bawal plant.
TDK Corporation operates more than 250 manufacturing, R&D and sales sites across 30 countries.
