Veteran actor Dharmendra passes away at 89; leaders pay tribute

Condolences poured in from political leaders on Monday following the demise of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra. The 89-year-old actor passed away at his residence in Mumbai after a prolonged period of ill health. His final rites were conducted at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle, with several members of the film fraternity in attendance.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described Dharmendra’s demise as “heartbreaking” and an “irreparable loss” to Indian cinema. In a message posted on his X handle, he said the actor’s contribution to the art world over nearly seven decades would be remembered with respect and affection, and conveyed condolences to the family, friends and fans.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also expressed grief over the actor’s passing. In a message on X, he termed Dharmendra’s death an irreplaceable loss to Indian cinema and prayed for strength for the bereaved family and admirers.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma paid tribute to Dharmendra, noting that the Padma Bhushan awardee and former Member of Parliament from Bikaner had taken Indian cinema to “new heights” through his impactful work and simplicity.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called the passing of Dharmendra “heartbreaking” and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Union Minister JP Nadda also described the actor’s demise as an irreparable loss to Indian cinema and the art world, recalling the deep influence Dharmendra had on audiences through his performances.

Popularly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, Dharmendra featured in several landmark films, including Sholay, Dharamveer, Chupke Chupke, Jugnu, Loha and Seeta Aur Geeta. He was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, in which he played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather.

Dharmendra is survived by his first wife Prakash Kaur, his second wife and actress Hema Malini, and six children — Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, Ajeita, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. The family has not disclosed the cause of death.
