Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday called for collective global efforts to combat climate change, describing it as humanity’s greatest threat. Speaking at the inaugural session of the 19th CII India-Africa Business Conclave in New Delhi, Dhankhar emphasized the importance of international cooperation in tackling this critical issue.
“It is crucial for all nations to unite their efforts against climate change- the greatest threat to humanity,” Dhankhar said. He highlighted the conclave as a platform for India and Africa to collaborate on contemporary challenges, aiming for a shared future of well-being.
Dhankhar reflected on the theme of the India-Africa Business Conclave, “Creating One Future,” which he said is deeply rooted in India’s civilizational ethos and echoed in the motto of India’s G20 presidency, “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
The vice president also celebrated the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent G20 member during India’s 2023 presidency, marking a significant geopolitical milestone.
Dhankhar said that a resurging Africa and a rising India have the potential to drive South-South cooperation. “Africa remains a top priority, and we are committed to a mutually beneficial partnership with deep historical roots, capable of being a global force for good,” he said.
Underscoring the deep historical ties between India and Africa, vice president Dhankhar said the shared histories and common struggles that have strengthened their relationship. He emphasized that rapid digitization and technological advancements present significant opportunities for cooperation.
Noel Tata, Chairman of the CII Africa Committee and TATA International Ltd., addressed the need for innovative financial strategies in India-Africa trade, particularly highlighting Rupee trade as a potential solution. He stressed the importance of building mutual trust between financial institutions in both regions to expand private-sector participation and facilitate innovative financial solutions.
Tata also outlined India’s vision of strengthening economic partnerships within multilateral frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aiming to solidify India’s role as a “Vishwabandhu” or “Friend of the World” on the global stage.
