As Gujarat marks “Vikas Saptah” to celebrate 23 years of transformative progress, the state has emerged as a global tourism hub, reflecting the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under his leadership, first as Chief Minister and now as Prime Minister, Gujarat’s hidden gems have been brought to the global stage.
During his tenure as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014, PM Modi launched the iconic ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ campaign in 2005, aiming to elevate the state’s tourism industry. By promoting major attractions and investing in infrastructure, Gujarat saw a dramatic rise in both domestic and international visitors.
Festivals like the Rann Utsav, Navratri, and the Tarnetar Fair gained national recognition, transforming Gujarat into a vibrant tourist destination. Speaking at an event in Kutch last year, Prime Minister Modi said, “Kutch was once underestimated, but today, Dhordo is recognized as one of the world’s best tourism villages, and the Rann Utsav has gained global prominence. Kutch now attracts lakhs of tourists every year.”
One of Gujarat’s premier tourist destinations, Gir National Park, is renowned as the only habitat of Asiatic lions. PM Modi’s conservation efforts during his time as Chief Minister helped preserve this unique ecosystem by enforcing anti-poaching laws and improving infrastructure, positioning Gir as a top destination for eco-tourism and wildlife enthusiasts.
Tourists visiting Gir echoed the park’s significance. “We haven’t seen this level of security for lions anywhere else,” said Neeta, a visitor, highlighting the park’s excellent facilities. Another tourist, Sheetal, praised the government’s efforts, adding, “The guide and bus driver provided excellent information during our visit.”
In addition to wildlife, Gujarat’s natural beauty is showcased through eco-tourism hotspots like Saputara and Gira Waterfalls, attracting nature lovers with their stunning landscapes and outdoor activities. The state’s rich cultural heritage, including forts, stepwells, and temples, further enhances its appeal.
The development of the Sabarmati Riverfront and the launch of the ‘Akshar River Cruise’ in Ahmedabad have provided visitors with unique experiences along the scenic river. Additionally, the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi, stands as a symbol of national pride and attracts tourists from across the globe.
A tourist visiting the Statue of Unity commented on Gujarat’s tourism growth, saying, “The state is open to the world, welcoming everyone to witness its cultural and historical marvels.” Another visitor praised the cleanliness and pleasant atmosphere, adding, “Seeing the statue was a truly moving experience.”
According to the Union tourism ministry, Gujarat saw a remarkable 58 percent increase in foreign tourists in 2023, with 28.06 lakh visitors compared to 17.77 lakh in 2022. This places Gujarat second only to Maharashtra in foreign tourist arrivals.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state continues to build on Prime Minister Modi’s vision with the launch of the “Khushboo Gujarat Ki 2.0” campaign. This dynamic initiative celebrates Gujarat’s vibrant culture, art, and heritage, reaching a global audience. By promoting tourism, investment, and cultural exchange through various events and exhibitions, it aims to showcase the state’s unique charm and rich traditions on the world stage.
