‘Welcome to Rome, my friend’: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni greets PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome ahead of formal bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening the India-Italy strategic partnership.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed PM Modi to Rome through a post on X saying, “Welcome to Rome, my friend!” She later thanked the Indian Prime Minister for a gift of Indian toffees.

PM Modi also shared the details of his meeting with Meloni on X. He said, “Upon landing in Rome, had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner followed by a visit to the iconic Colosseum. We exchanged perspectives on a wide range of subjects. Looking forward to our talks today, where we will continue the conversation on how to boost the India-Italy friendship.”

Earlier, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said PM Modi’s visit would open a new chapter in the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. He noted that the Prime Minister was warmly received at the airport by Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Jaiswal said India and Italy share a longstanding and multifaceted partnership, adding that the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral ties.

Upon his arrival in Italy on Tuesday, PM Modi said, “Landed in Rome, Italy. I will be meeting President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and holding discussions with them. This visit will focus on how to boost India-Italy cooperation, especially focusing on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 will also be reviewed.”
