‘Widows’ Holi,’ a unique cultural celebration in Vrindavan, has become a symbol of change, promoting inclusion and compassion.
Vrindavan, known as the childhood home of Lord Krishna, has long served as a refuge for widowed Hindu women. Often marginalized by society, these widows face hardships and rely on support from the government, NGOs, and local temples and ashrams. The celebration of Holi by widows marks a departure from traditional restrictions, allowing them to participate in the festivities with joy.
Across the country, Holi celebrations have begun. With just one day left until the festival of colors, people are flocking to markets to buy colors and water guns. Homes are being decorated, and festive sweets like gujiyas are being prepared in kitchens nationwide.
Earlier this week, devotees celebrated the Rangbhari Ekadashi festival at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, marking the start of Holi festivities. The atmosphere was filled with color, devotion, and excitement as participants took part in the celebrations. Meanwhile, traditional ‘Lathmar Holi’ festivities began in Nandagaon on Sunday, kicking off a week-long celebration in Mathura.
The festivities also included Laddu Mar Holi at the Shri Ladliji Maharaj Temple in Barsana, where devotees joyfully threw sweets at one another as part of the ritual.
This year, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Rangotsav 2025 at Shri Radha Bihari Inter College in Barsana, Mathura, showering flower petals on the gathered crowd. During his visit, Adityanath stated that after development efforts in Ayodhya and Prayagraj, Mathura and Vrindavan would now undergo similar transformation, with the state government committed to enhancing the region.
Speaking at the event, Adityanath said, “Visitors to Barsana are experiencing the ropeway facility for the first time. Development projects worth ₹100 crore are in progress. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Kashi has been revamped, and Ayodhya has been revived. Now, it is Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, and Govardhan’s turn. The government will make every effort to develop this region. With a BJP government in Delhi, the Yamuna will also be cleaned up.”
