With chants of Mahadev and spiritual fervour, Akharas reach Prayagraj for Mahakumbh Mela

The Mahakumbh Mela is set to kick off in Prayagraj with a grand spiritual display, as akharas, or groups of ascetics, arrive at the holy site.

The air is filled with chants of “Mahadev” as sadhus draped in saffron and covered in ashes make their way to the campgrounds, signaling the beginning of this sacred event.

Mahanirvani Akhara’s entrance was marked by traditional music, including the rhythmic beats of the Damaru drum, and the chanting of Lord Shiva’s name. Some sadhus arrived on horseback, adding to the vibrant spectacle.

The Atal Akhara’s arrival was no less majestic, with a grand procession that was warmly welcomed by local officials with garlands. Covered in ashes and adorned with garlands, these seers made their entrance to the sound of drums and horses, while waving the Akhara’s flags.

Prominent akhadas, such as Niranjani, Ahwan, and Juna Akhara, the largest Sanyasi akhara, have also made their presence felt in the camp. Acharya Vishwasanand Saraswati of Atal Akhara invited people to witness the unity of those gathered and to bring such unity into their own communities.

Jagadguru Narendracharyaji Maharaj, who attended the Mahakumbh in 2019, praised the improved arrangements for this year’s event and expressed his blessings for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has confirmed that all preparations for the Mahakumbh have been completed and extended an invitation to all to witness this divine gathering.

He emphasised the responsibility of hosting such a grand event, particularly with the Prime Minister and Chief Minister regularly visiting Prayagraj.

Minister JPS Rathore also emphasized the technological advancements at this year’s Kumbh, with expectations of over 45 crore devotees attending. The event has been modernised with the deployment of AI-enabled cameras and underwater drones for enhanced security.

The Mahakumbh, held every 12 years, will commence on January 13, 2025, and end on February 26. The main rituals, the Shahi Snan (royal baths), will take place on January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).

Visitors can also enjoy performances of folk dances from different states across India at 20 cultural stages set up by the Uttar Pradesh Culture Department.

With the confluence of faith, spirituality, and technology, Prayagraj is fully prepared to host this massive spiritual congregation, which promises to be a sight to behold.
