World Rapid champion Koneru Humpy set for Norway Chess women 2025 return

Reigning World Rapid Chess Champion and Indian Grandmaster Humpy Koneru will make her return to compete in the Norway Chess Women tournament this May. Ranked as the third-highest-rated female player heading into the event, she is a strong contender for the title.

Humpy has had a trailblazing career, making history in 2002 as the first Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title. Today, she continues to dominate Indian women’s chess while earning global respect for her contributions to the sport.

The World No. 6 boasts an impressive career, highlighted by her victories in the World Rapid Championship in 2019 and 2024, and her recognition as the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year in 2020. She has also excelled in prestigious events such as the Olympiad, Asian Games, and Asian Championships, firmly establishing herself as one of the world’s leading female chess players.

The Norway Chess Women 2025 tournament offers Humpy another platform to display her extraordinary skills. As one of only two women in chess history to surpass the 2600 rating mark, she has consistently broken barriers and inspired countless young players worldwide. Her participation underscores her unwavering commitment to competing at the highest level.

“It’s an honour to play in the prestigious Norway Chess Women tournament,” Humpy said in a statement released by Norway Chess.

When asked to describe herself, she chose the word “self-disciplined,” a trait that has been instrumental in her rise to the top. This discipline has helped her maintain focus, consistency, and resilience even when facing formidable opponents.

“We are thrilled to welcome Humpy back to Norway Chess Women 2025. Her achievements speak volumes,” said Kjell Madland, Founder and Tournament Director of Norway Chess.

Norway Chess is renowned as one of the world’s premier chess tournaments, showcasing top male and female players in an exclusive 6-player double round-robin format. The introduction of Norway Chess Women in 2024, with equal prize funds for men and women, highlights the event’s commitment to gender equality and innovation in the sport.

Norway Chess 2025 is scheduled to take place from May 26 to June 6.
