India and Mauritius strengthen bilateral ties with MoU signing and project inaugurations

India and Mauritius today have signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) spanning various sectors, including Financial Services, Civil Services, Taxation, and Investigating Agencies. The decision came following delegation-level talks held at the National Assembly of Mauritius, attended by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth of Mauritius.

During the meeting, President Murmu and Prime Minister Jugnauth jointly inaugurated 14 small development projects supported by India. Additionally, they unveiled the foundation stone for the New Forensic Science Laboratory, a project funded by India, showcasing the commitment of both nations to enhancing cooperation in key areas.

Earlier in her official visit, President Murmu visited the Aapravasi Ghat and the Intercontinental Slavery Museum, underscoring the historical significance of these sites. Aapravasi Ghat, located in Port Louis, was originally built in 1849 as an immigration depot to receive indentured laborers from India, Africa, and Asia, who played a crucial role in the island’s sugar estates. Recognizing its importance, the site was declared a national monument in 1987 and renamed Aapravasi Ghat. The Intercontinental Slavery Museum pays tribute to the contributions of African and Asian slaves to Mauritius’ colonial economy and society.

President Murmu emphasized the vital contributions of indentured laborers to Mauritius’ economic development during her visit to these sites, underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations.

President Murmu is scheduled to visit Ganga Talao, a site of cultural, geological, natural, religious, and spiritual significance, particularly for the Hindu community in Mauritius. During the holy week of Maha Shivratri, Ganga Talao attracts nearly four lakh pilgrims from various countries who come to offer prayers to Lord Shiva, highlighting its enduring importance in the lives of Mauritians.
