The international community has welcomed a temporary ceasefire agreement reached by Israel and Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement, and called upon relevant parties to reach a permanent ceasefire and to resume peace talks on the basis of the two-state solution.

The Hamas said on Wednesday that it had reached a four-day ceasefire agreement with Israel under a Qatari-Egyptian mediation after 46 days of bloody conflict in the besieged coastal enclave.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated in a post released on Wednesday that he welcomed the truce deal between the two sides and it is an important step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done. His statement added that the UN will mobilize all its capacities to support the implementation of the agreement and maximize positive impact on the humanitarian situation in the war-torn enclave.

On the same day, Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit also welcomed the humanitarian truce. He expressed his hope that the announced truce would lead to a comprehensive cease-fire in the besieged enclave and an end to the brutal Israeli aggression against its civilian population.

Aboul-Gheit emphasized that the only way out of the recurring cycles of violence in the Middle East is to work out a comprehensive political solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and King Abdullah II of Jordan are also among those to welcome the truce between Israel and Hamas. During the Egyptian-Jordanian Summit that took place in Cairo on Wednesday, both of them emphasized the importance of continuous endeavors to achieve a permanent ceasefire and to ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into the Gaza. Both countries stressed that any new initiatives aiming to successfully resolve the Palestine-Israel issue must center on the two-state solution, while safeguarding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
