Bangladesh: BNP leader shot dead, another injured in Dhaka

A leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) affiliated organisation was shot dead, while another man was injured in a shooting incident in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area on Wednesday night, triggering protests and a heavy law-enforcement presence in the area.

The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman Musabbir, former general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of the Swechchhasebok Dal, the volunteer wing of the BNP. The injured, Abu Sufian, is the general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Owners’ Association.

According to police, the shooting took place around 8:40 pm in Tejturi Bazar, near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex. Unidentified assailants opened fire on the two men, leaving Musabbir critically injured. He was first taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Abu Sufian was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Tejgaon Division Fazlul Karim said two people were shot in the attack. Police sources said multiple rounds were fired before the assailants fled the scene.

Following the killing, a group of angry protesters blocked the SAARC Fountain intersection in Dhaka, disrupting traffic. Army personnel and police later arrived, dispersed the demonstrators, and cleared the road, although tensions remained high in the area.

Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have launched an investigation to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the shooting.
