In Bangladesh, an uncontrolled mob on Thursday night vandalised and set fire the residence of former president Abdul Hamid in Kishoreganj district. According to local media reports, a large crowd stormed the house, broke into the premises, and looted valuables before setting fire. Earlier in the evening, a mob demolished the Kishoreganj district Awami League office using a bulldozer, escalating tensions in the area.
Daily Star newspaper reports that houses of Awami League (AL) leaders were attacked and torched, and murals and busts of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were demolished and defaced in nearly two dozen districts on Thursday. A day after the Dhanmondi-32 residence of Sheikh Mujib was torched and torn down, protesters attacked, ransacked, and set fire to the house of Obaidul Quader, general secretary of AL and former road, transport and bridges minister, in Noakhali District.
Under the collapsed law and order situation, mobs vandalized and arsoned Awami League offices and its leaders houses and other establishments in Rajshahi, Cummila, Barisal, Pabna, Narayanganj, Tangail, Narsingdi, Bagerhat, Bogura, Chuadanga, pirojpur, Jamalpur and many districts.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) urged Dr Yunus led interim government to control nationwide unrest. Voicing deep concern over acts of vandalism and arson across the country, the BNP has called upon the interim government to establish control over the situation by strictly enforcing law and order.
In a statement early on Friday, the party also expressed its concern that if the government fails to demonstrate its ability to control the current situation, the stability of the state and government will be at risk.
BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said there is a public perception that the current interim government has failed to take effective and visible steps in the past six months to bring the runaway autocrat and its associates to justice.
