Union Health Minister J.P Nadda has launched the Integrated Training for Primary Healthcare Teams, a unified and competency-driven framework aimed at strengthening India’s frontline healthcare delivery system.
The initiative was unveiled during the 10th National Summit on “Innovation and Inclusivity: Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future”, which was held in Chandigarh from April 30 to May 1.
According to the Health Ministry, the new framework seeks to replace fragmented programme-based training with a structured and integrated model to build the capabilities of frontline healthcare workers, including ASHAs, ANMs and Community Health Officers (CHOs). The ministry added that the move would help transform primary healthcare teams into confident providers of comprehensive and people-centred care.
According to the government, the initiative aligns with the broader vision of strengthening Comprehensive Primary Health Care under the Ayushman Bharat programme, where Ayushman Arogya Mandirs serve as centres for preventive, promotive and curative healthcare services.
Highlighting the importance of community participation, the ministry noted that platforms such as Jan Arogya Samitis, Mahila Arogya Samitis, Village Health and Sanitation Committees and AAM Shivirs have played a key role in deepening healthcare outreach. It added that well-trained primary healthcare workforce is essential for improving quality of care, reducing pressure on higher-level medical facilities and strengthening public trust in the healthcare system. It added that digital platforms such as iGOT Karmayogi would support continuous learning and help make the workforce future-ready.
According to the Health Ministry, over 70 per cent of India’s primary healthcare workforce comprises women, including ASHAs, ANMs and CHOs. The initiative is also aimed at advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Nari Shakti” by empowering women healthcare workers at the grassroots level.
The Health Ministry described the initiative as a strategic investment in strengthening last-mile healthcare delivery and advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
