Centre proposes mandatory ‘Country of Origin’ filter on e-commerce platforms

The Department of Consumer Affairs has proposed an amendment to make it mandatory for e-commerce platforms to provide searchable and sortable filters based on the ‘Country of Origin’ for packaged commodities sold online.

The Draft Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025, issued on Monday, aim to enhance consumer empowerment and transparency in online shopping. The proposed change will enable consumers to identify the origin of products easily and make informed purchasing decisions.

According to the draft rules, every e-commerce entity selling imported products will be required to provide a searchable and sortable filter for the country of origin along with their product listings.

The Department has invited comments from stakeholders on the draft amendment till November 22, 2025. Feedback can be sent to the department through the provided official email addresses. The draft notification is also available on the Department’s website.

The proposal supports the Government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives by making ‘Made in India’ products more visible to consumers. It aims to create a level playing field for Indian manufacturers, ensuring domestic products receive equal prominence alongside imported goods.

The Department of Consumer Affairs said the proposed amendment is another step towards a transparent, consumer-friendly, and competitive e-commerce ecosystem that aligns with national priorities and builds greater trust in digital marketplaces.
