The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has announced the inclusion of chess as one of the 16 competitive titles at the inaugural Esports Nations Cup 2026 (ENC), scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2 to 29, 2026.
According to the organisers, the chess competition at ENC 2026 will feature an unprecedented number of participants, providing opportunities for emerging players and wider representation from underrepresented nations as the traditional game continues its expansion into the global esports ecosystem.
Tournament Format and Schedule
The chess tournament will begin on November 2 and conclude with the playoff final on November 8, 2026. A total of 128 players will compete in the event.
The opening phase will feature a round-robin group stage comprising 16 groups of eight players each. The top four players from every group will advance to the knockout stage, where 64 players will compete in a single-elimination playoff bracket.
Group-stage matches, as well as the Round of 64 and Round of 32 fixtures, will be played in a best-of-two format. From the quarterfinals onward, matches will follow a best-of-four format. Armageddon games will be used as tie-breakers where required. All matches will be played under a Rapid 10+0 time control.
Qualification and Ranking Criteria
Players will represent their respective nations, with a maximum of two players allowed per country. Of the 128 participants, 64 players from 64 nations will receive direct invitations based on official Champions Chess Tour (CCT) rankings, limited to one player per nation. The remaining slots will be filled through regional qualifiers and wildcard entries.
The cut-off date for direct qualification through CCT rankings is May 26, 2026. In cases where fewer than 64 nations are represented, results from the Titled Tuesday Spring Split will be used as a tie-breaker.
Regional qualifiers, operated by Chess.com, will be held across seven regions between June 6–7 and June 13–14. Each region will offer eight qualification slots, with two qualifiers per region.
Growing Role of Chess in Esports
Chess made its debut at the Esports World Cup in 2025, drawing significant global attention and marking a shift in how the game is consumed by younger, digital-first audiences. The event featured players from 20 nations, with Magnus Carlsen winning the inaugural title.
India’s top-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi described his experience at the Esports World Cup as energising and said the esports format had introduced chess to a new generation of fans.
Sagar Shah, Co-founder and CEO of ChessBase India, said the nation-based format of the Esports Nations Cup would generate strong engagement among Indian chess followers, similar to the excitement seen during the Chess Olympiad.
International Master and chess commentator Tania Sachdev said the nation-centric format adds emotional depth to competition, combining pride, pressure and fan involvement, and strengthens chess’s place within the esports world.
With the introduction of chess at the Esports Nations Cup 2026, organisers aim to further integrate the centuries-old game into modern competitive entertainment, reinforcing its growing presence on the global esports stage.
