Cox’s Bazar, a tourist destination of Bangladesh gets railway connectivity

Cox’s Bazar, a popular tourist destination of Bangladesh, got its railway connectivity. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated the much-awaited 102-kilometre Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar dual-gauge single railway line at a ceremony at newly constructed Cox’s Bazar Railway Station.

Addressing the inauguration programme, Hasina said that today Cox’s Bazar has been linked to the railway network. This was a longstanding demand of this region.

She said the new rail line will ensure fast and smooth train services from Chattogram to the tourist town Cox’s Bazar. In the future, the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line will be connected with the under-construction Matarbari deep sea port.

As part of the Trans-Asian Railway (TAR) network, this is also expected to improve access to Myanmar and beyond.

On November 01, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated three India assisted development projects in Bangladesh. Of them, two were the railway line projects: the 12.24 km Akhaura-Agartala cross-border rail line and the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line. With completion of these developmental projects in the railway sector of Bangladesh, connectivity in this sub-region has been enhanced.

An eye-catching Cox’s Bazar railway station built in the shape of an oyster stands just three kilometers away from Cox’s Bazar sea beach, which is expected to become also a recreation destination.
