Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides Receives Ceremonial Welcome in Delhi

Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Cyprus, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday after concluding the Mumbai leg of his four-day State Visit to India and was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour.

In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs said the visiting dignitary was warmly received by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta.

The ministry said the visit builds on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Cyprus in June 2025 and reflects the shared commitment of both countries to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Earlier, Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday, where he was received by Devendra Fadnavis and Jishnu Dev Varma.

The President also participated in a business forum in Mumbai and visited the National Stock Exchange of India, where he took part in the ceremonial bell-ringing event.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit highlights the growing momentum in India-Cyprus relations, rooted in longstanding ties and strong people-to-people connections.

Ahead of his arrival in India, Nikos Christodoulides described the trip as “very important” and said it would mark a key step in strengthening cooperation in political, economic, investment and tourism sectors.

During the May 20-23 visit, President Christodoulides and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to hold discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, technology, education, culture, mobility, defence and security, Artificial Intelligence, FinTech, innovation and research.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss regional and global issues, including cooperation in multilateral forums.

The visiting President will also call on Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honour. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet the Cypriot President.

President Christodoulides is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, senior officials and business leaders.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the visit assumes added significance as Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

India and Cyprus are set to mark 65 years of diplomatic relations in February 2027.
