Death toll rises to 209 in Nepal flood disaster

Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs confirms that the death toll has increased to 209 people, 29 people are still missing and 142 people are injured. Nepal Army and Police have rescued more than 4500 people. Today by use of helicopters for search, Rescue and relief operations in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Sindhuli and Lalitpur Nepal army has rescued 425 people.

Severe damage to infrastructure has been reported in flood-affected areas, with roads blocked or destroyed and 16 bridges damaged. The loss of personal property has also been extensive, leaving many residents struggling to cope. Businesses and livelihoods have been severely disrupted across the region.

Efforts to clear debris from blocked roads are underway, with the Department of Roads focused on restoring vital connections to Nepal’s federal capital. Landslides in Makwanpur have blocked the Bhainse-Bhimphedi road, while roads connecting Hetauda-Kathmandu and Hetauda-Dharan-Chatara have been partially reopened. The Kulekhani-Fakhel-Farping road in Indrasarovar rural municipality remains completely obstructed due to landslides.

This morning, two-way traffic resumed along the Prithvi Highway after landslide debris was cleared. Over 1,700 vehicles have since entered Kathmandu. Efforts to clear other blocked roads continue, including landslide-affected routes in Dahding district.

Passengers stranded along the BP Highway in Kavrepalanchowk due to flooding from the Roshi River are expected to be rescued soon. A Nepali Army team has been deployed to assist with the rescue operations using ropes and aerial support.
