Diljit Dosanjh nominated for International Emmy for ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’

Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh has received a nomination for the Best Performance by an Actor award at the 2025 International Emmy Awards for his role in the Netflix biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila.

Directed and co-written by Imtiaz Ali, the Hindi-language film chronicles the life of Chamkila, a Dalit musician who rose to fame in the early 1980s before being tragically assassinated in 1988. Parineeti Chopra also stars in the film as his wife, Amarjot.

Chamkila was considered the ‘Elvis of Punjab’, whose provocative music captured rural Punjab. The narrative blends performance sequences with the social realities that fueled Chamkila’s songs, tackling themes of caste, desire, and conservatism.

The music, composed by Oscar- and Grammy-winning A.R. Rahman, combines folk traditions with contemporary arrangements, creating a musical storytelling style that diverges from conventional biopics.

Dosanjh has recently gained international recognition, performing at Coachella in 2023 and appearing on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ in 2024, where he delivered high-energy performances of his songs “Born to Shine” and “G.O.A.T.”

The 53rd International Emmy Awards are scheduled for November 24 in New York City.
