India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, arrived in the country on Friday through the Benapole land port, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment in Dhaka.
Trivedi was received at the border by Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe. He is set to succeed Pranay Verma as India’s envoy to Bangladesh.
The Ministry of External Affairs had announced Trivedi’s appointment on April 27. He received his Letters of Credence from President Droupadi Murmu on June 5 ahead of assuming the post.
A seasoned politician, Trivedi has served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also represented the Barrackpore constituency in the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2019 and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Trivedi was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2016-17 and has chaired several parliamentary forums, including the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021 after resigning from the All India Trinamool Congress.
Before taking charge in Dhaka, Trivedi visited Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata, where he spoke about the importance of India-Bangladesh relations and their shared democratic aspirations.
He said the relationship between the two countries extends beyond geographical boundaries and is rooted in strong people-to-people connections. Referring to Subhas Chandra Bose, Trivedi described the visit as personally significant, noting that he grew up in the neighbourhood and was deeply influenced by Netaji’s ideals.
